John Gretton “Jocko” Willink (born September 8, 1971) is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL officer, author, leadership consultant, podcaster, and entrepreneur. He is best known for co-authoring the bestselling book Extreme Ownership, hosting the Jocko Podcast, and co-founding the leadership consulting firm Echelon Front.

Jocko Willink is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL officer who commanded SEAL Team 3’s Task Unit Bruiser during the Battle of Ramadi in the Iraq War. Under his leadership, the unit became one of the most highly decorated special operations units of the conflict.
After retiring from the Navy, Willink co-founded Echelon Front, a leadership consulting firm, with fellow SEAL Leif Babin. He later launched the highly influential Jocko Podcast and authored multiple bestselling books on leadership, discipline, and personal growth.
Willink was born in Torrington, Connecticut, and raised in New England. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school, completing Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training with Class 177. His career spanned 20 years, including multiple deployments overseas.
Willink’s leadership in Ramadi became the foundation for many of his later lessons in leadership, accountability, and discipline.
